Unit 2 Evaluation
I chose the theme Collections as I collect things and am interested in how people are connected to the things they collect. I also thought about how collections are displayed in a formal way in museums around a theme,in contrast to random collections like in a car boot sale.
I looked at the work of artists and photographers and what I learned from them and found interesting:
Olivia Parker the texture and depth of black and white still life, things from nature, use of light, and the boxes/frames, timeless feel.
Todd McLellan Some of my favourite images, deconstructed mechanical objects, neat composition of pieces on white backgrounds, the surprise of dismantled objects looking exploded
Joseph Cornell bizarre collections of old, unwanted objects, boxes as frames, intriguing compositions that make you ask questions.
Sophie Calle unusual themed collections meaningful to the artist, how they are displayed.
Emily Briscoe bright colours, ordered compositions, creating patterns with related groups of objects including natural forms, contemporary and playful style
Jim Golden themed and ordered arrangements of vintage objects that are peoples collections, especially related to music – guitars, tape players - objects themed by colour, scale.
I used different types of camera:
I used the ipad to add filters and to edit, and tried Hipstamatic app. I used iphoto and Photoshop to manipulate the images. I experimented with using natural light, finding ways to diffuse light with things at home, and also finding different backgrounds to create a variety of colours and textures. For the final piece I used a soft box, tripod and a white fabric background on a stand.
I recorded my ideas on the website using images and galleries and descriptions of my ideas to show how I developed themes. I described my experiments - which things worked well and which didn’t. My final ideas were to create a still life with a contemporary feel using something from nature (flowers). And as a contrast to represent collections with personal meaning by creating a colourful, modern looking image of an old machine.
