Unit 1 Evaluation
From this unit i have expanded my knowledge in many areas, from looking at the works of famous photographers and developing the vocabularly around photography. It has introduced me to different genres and artists, and has encouraged me to think about what are the elements that make a good photograph. And also learnt what syles appeal to me. I was especially interested to discover the work of the artist Cindy Sherman, especially her unusual and humourous and over the top variation on standard portraits.
I was excited to learn new techniques and processess like the camera-less Cyanotypes and photograms. The simplicity of cyanotypes very much appealed to me, as well as the abstract style of many of the images using photograms. My favourite experiments were with light painting and I was inspired by what I had learnt to carry on experimenting with light painting techniques in my personal photography.
I have developed my skills using my DSLR and have experimented with settings, lighting, backdrops and using a tripod in my end of year project. I was also able to further refine my Photoshop skills in creating my final pieces. I have practiced these a lot in my personal photography and I am now more confident in my photoshop abilities and how to use the various elements to manipulate photographs - for example by increasing exposure and opacity, as well as removing shadows or unwanted areas from an image.
The opportunity to experiment with the camera on ipods and ipads and apps also increased my knowledge about using new technology to create images.
